About
I make functional ceramics from my home studio in East Sussex.
My work is centred on simple, tactile forms - pieces made to be used and held, with a natural weight and balance in the hand. I work primarily in porcelain, drawn to the clay’s strength and fluidity when throwing.
Much of the work is shaped by time spent by the sea and in nature - along the coastlines of Cornwall, the west of Ireland, Northern Ireland and the Outer Hebrides. I’m drawn to the changing light, the rhythm of the water, and the contrast of soft sand and dark rock. These places have a way of slowing everything down, and that sense of calm sits at the heart of what I make.
Ceramics has become a way of returning to that feeling. The process of working with clay- centering, shaping, repeating - creates a quiet rhythm where the noise of everyday life falls away. Each piece is made with that same intention: to bring a sense of ease, balance and quiet into daily rituals.
Process
Each piece is wheel-thrown, then turned and finished by hand.
After an initial bisque firing, pieces are glazed in a deliberately restrained palette, using celadon and ash glazes, which are chosen for their response in the kiln. Final firings take place in a reduction kiln, allowing subtle variations to emerge - no two pieces are exactly the same.
My throwing process is slow and considered, guided as much by feel as by form. I’m interested in pieces that feel good to hold - grounded and balanced. I aim to create work that is functional, but also calming to use, shaped by the rhythms and imperfections found in nature.
